Faith and Trust
Trust can be described as faith. We live by faith everyday.
We have faith and trust that we will wake up each day, that our next breath won’t be our last, that our hearts will keep beating despite us having no control over it.
But what are you really putting your faith and trust in this life? Is it a nice home or people? Or maybe it’s money, popularity, intellect or even your own religious efforts to make yourself right before God. Or maybe you even go as far to deny that God exists, and you believe that you are merely a random collection of molecules and are here by complete chance. Do you really live like you have no meaning and that anything goes with no absolutes, truth and morality? Such absolutes can not come from nothing. They come from the transcendent creator God. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made (creation, life), so that people are without excuse (Romans 1:20) This personal God has revealed himself to us through the creation and our conscience. But its only through his word the holy bible, can we know our Creator and his revealed purpose for us.
You see Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever (Westminster shorter catechism) So to put all your trust and faith in the things of this life, rather than the one who made you and all life, is the very essence of sin against God, and is ultimately futile and pointless, as you will one day die.
There is one thing you can have faith and trust to be true and reliable; That the same God who created you, and upholds the universe that we exist in. Supernaturally inspired 40 different authors, to pen 66 books (Old testament, New testament) over a period of 1500 years, to reveal to all mankind that Jesus Christ is the messiah. The Bible is a reliable collection of historical documents, written by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They report supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophecies, and they claim to be divine rather than human in origin. (see 2 Peter 1:16-21)
The problem; Sin
That’s right you can trust that the bible gives you an accurate picture of your future, “as it is appointed once for man to die then comes judgement”(Hebrews 9:27) God will judge you according to His perfect moral law. This moral law is a reflection of Gods holy character (See the 10 commandments). You, like every human are born with a sinful nature, you sin because you are a sinner: And he (Jesus) said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting (desiring what others have), wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” (Mark 7:20-23).
They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. (Romans 1:29-31,)
Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
The bible paints an accurate picture of the condition of everyone, a book that was merely written by men, would not paint mankind in such a way. The Bible is the only book that explains why we are all this way.
All of us fall into one of those categories. We are naturally drawn towards these ways. We are completely corrupt to our very core. Man also has an aversion to the truth, a hatred of God, and a love of independence from his law. This corrupt nature was inherited from our original parents Adam and Eve, who broke God’s commandment in the garden. You are already condemned for your sin, and because God is holy, good and perfectly just, HIS law demands your sin must be punished. Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin (Romans 3:19-20) God’s holy law brings knowledge of your sin, and is to stop your mouth from trying to justify yourself. It leaves you helpless and hopelessly condemned.
Justice demands someone pays
You might think why would a God of love punish me for a few short years of sins. It’s because of who it’s against, and sin itself is a direct attack on God’s holy character. God is a holy God, perfect in love and holiness, the complete opposite of evil. God cannot behold any evil thing in his sight; You who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong. (Habakkuk 1:13) Think about when someone commits an evil act against a child, think of the righteous anger you feel toward that individual. Or when we see all sorts of depraved acts committed against helpless people. We cry out for justice. Yet many people think almighty God should simply overlook their crimes, as they think they are not as bad as others. We always compare ourselves to other people who we think are worse. Yes God will punish murderers, child molesters, rapists, terrorists and criminals. But since God is so good and is pure love, he has a pure hatred of all sin, as it is so offensive to his holiness. Sin is the opposite of his character. So he will also punish, liars, thieves, blasphemers of his Holy name, adulterers (God sees watching pornography as adultery) drunks and fornicators(having sex outside marriage).
Yes, God will judge with equity, the standard is not other people, the standard is his holy law. Just as a judge in a human court must exercise justice to criminals who have violated the law. How much more will the judge of all the universe do what is right and punish the wicked ; those who have and continue to violate his law. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. (Galatians 6:7)
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels’” (Matthew 25:41) in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 13:42)
But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters (those who worship false gods or put anything above the one true God), and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)
But this same righteous and Holy God who is angry at the wicked every day (Psalm 7:11) This same God, for there is only one; is also loving, gracious, merciful, forgiving and kind in that he sent his one and only son.
All of us face this terrible fate, but God lovingly provided a way for us to be reconciled to him. 2000 years God the Father sent Jesus Christ the son, who is fully God and fully man. By the holy spirit he was Supernaturally conceived and born of a Virgin just as predicted 700 years earlier by the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 7:14) Unlike you and me, He was born without sin. He was the only innocent man to ever live. He came to earth to fulfill the Ministry of Prophet, Priest and King. He Lived a perfect life for some 33 years under the law of God on behalf of lawless sinners. He was put to death for crimes He did not commit but out of Love for his creation, He voluntarily suffered and died a bloody death on a cross as predicted hundreds of years before (read psalm 22 and Isaiah 53) as a substitute for sinners. Someone had to die. Justice had to be satisfied against the wickedness of man’s sin and rebellion. Jesus took the full holy wrath of God on the cross for the sins we committed against God, so that we would not have to receive the wrath we deserve for our sins against God. God displayed his hatred of sin and his supreme love at the cross. On the cross Jesus cried out: “It is finished”(John 19:30) Jesus said: Greater love has no man than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13). Jesus laid down his life for his friends, and also his enemies. Justice and Mercy met at the cross.
He was buried, then three days later as predicted by the scriptures hundreds of years before, he rose from the dead ( See 1 Corinthians 15). He appeared to many witnesses over a period of forty days, to give testimony that sin, death, hell and all evil have been defeated by Him alone. Proving that he is Fully God, and that he alone has atoned for the sins of his people. Before he ascended into heaven he commissioned his disciples, or now the church; “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptize will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned (Mark 16: 15-16) He then ascended into heaven and has now been given the name above all names, he is LORD of Lords, and KING of kings, and will one day judge the living and the dead. He alone is God and He will either be your Saviour or your judge.
Your only hope is to Have faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone
Who will you trust? The son of God, yourself, or other sinful men who deny the God they know exists. You may say, well I don’t believe that. Jesus said: Unless you believe that I am he (God) you will die in your sins. (John 8:24) But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” (John 8:45-47) “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the father except through me”(John 14:6) You will either bow your knee before Christ as his redeemed child, or as his created subject and his enemy; Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11) Even if you claim not believe. For there is a way that seems right to men, but the end leads to death (Proverbs 14:13). Or Maybe you think you are too good for hell, and instead put your trust in man made religions, that say if you follow their rules, and perform rituals and enough good deeds, your good may outweigh your bad, and hope that God may let you into heaven. But this is just another form of man’s self righteous pride, and is utterly detestable to a holy God. No amount of religious efforts, prayers, self improvement programmes, philosophies, or attending mosque or church can save you. These outward acts cant remove your record of sin against God. All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf and like the wind our sins sweep us away (Isaiah 64:6)
God’s Word tell us this: And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air(The Devil), the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience-among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved- (Ephesians 2:1-5) It was God himself who has decided to lovingly save, and offer forgiveness to mankind through Jesus Christ alone. Only God alone can pardon you because of the Lord Jesus Christ’s death on the cross; Having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross (Colossians 2:14). Now God can legally forgive those who come to Christ by faith alone; For it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no-one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9) .
What must you do?
Dear reader, now you have heard the gospel, God commands you to repent (a change of mind, going from loving your sin to hating sin like God hates it, and forsaking it). Turning from your lifestyle of indifference and disobedience towards your creator. Jesus said: “Unless you repent you will perish”(Luke 13:5) you must humbly acknowledge and confess you are a sinner; for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6) and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be forgiven of your sin. God himself will cause you to be born again. Jesus said unless a man is born again he cannot enter the kingdom of God (John 3:3). This means the nature you have at the moment, which is corrupt, self righteous, and refuses, and is even unable to submit to God, must be changed. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. (Romans 8: 7-8) God himself promised: I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26). You will then begin to love and experience the living God. You will begin to hate the sin you once loved, and seek to please and live for God. You must have this new nature (2 Corinthians 5:16) (John 3:3) or you will not enter heaven, but be justly damned forever for your sins against the most high God.
Once again Dear reader, we say this in love for your soul, and as your fellow human beings, and sinners who are saved only by grace. Today is the day of salvation (to be saved from God’s righteous wrath), Repent and cry out to God in prayer, and trust in Jesus Christ and his perfect life and substitutionary death, and glorious resurrection on behalf of sinners. Receive God’s love and mercy. God demonstrated his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8) You can have complete faith that you will be forgiven, and adopted in God’s family forever. Jesus Christ alone will save you from the certain judgement for your sins against almighty God.
Read psalm 51 and make it your prayer today. Your very eternal soul is at stake.
Trust in Jesus today.
For God so loved the world that he gave one and only son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16)
For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13).
