Julie’s Jottings | Suffering

Hi Ladies,

I hope that you are having a great week!
Please contact us if you need prayer or someone to talk to (contact information can be found at the bottom of this page) – we are here for you!
I caught a flu bug and it took a few weeks to fully recover. And since I have been thinking more than usual about suffering (!), I am pondering that God wants me to share some thoughts with you about it.
It helps immensely when we talk to God about our pain. We have a wonderful and perfect Father and He wants to hear from us all the time. He loves when we take time out of each day to talk to Him and read His word.
Instead of hearing/speaking the “self-talk” that is in our minds so much, ask God to remind you to talk to Him. He created us to have a relationship with Him!
If your soul is saved, you are a child of The King and you have privileges! You can tell God of your troubles and fears and ask Him for help- even in the smallest of things. Ask Him for wisdom, guidance and comfort- even faith (if you are running low)! He will bless you with these things if you ask- always!
It is a promise from God and He always keeps His word.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5 (KJV)

I have found that the more honest I am with God, the closer my relationship is with Him. I am always blessed by sharing my true feelings (even the ones I don’t want Him to know about). When I ask for forgiveness and help, He walks me through restoration and healing. How awesome is our God that we can be that honest with Him? He is so good, gracious, patient and kind. I stumbled upon this truth one day when I was dealing with a painful person in my life. I began praying to God about it and then it turned into a very emotional conversation- I began asking Him why He would allow such pain in my life. I told God how angry and upset I was at this person. I told Him that I couldn’t understand why He would allow me to experience that kind of pain- didn’t He know it was too much and I couldn’t handle it? I asked Him why on earth He was allowing me to be so hurt. God was so gracious and kind to me- He let me have my “tantrum” and my honesty with Him opened the door for Him to heal my heart. He showed me that if I gave it all over to Him and forgave that person I would be healed. What a blessing! I was freed from one of the most painful relationships in my life! I still think of that person sometimes and it makes me a little sad, but I am no longer deeply scarred. And let me tell you– God’s justice is so much better than anything we are capable of! I have seen it. It happens in His perfect timing (sometimes it takes years), but it will happen. Nobody harms a child of God without having to answer for their wrongs (remember though, we must do our part and forgive them- this is required by God). To forgive, sometimes I have to say daily, hourly (or every five minutes!)- in my mind/out loud if I am alone – “I choose to forgive them and I hand it over to you God” until the pain is gone. I also pray for their salvation. Please don’t carry around unforgiveness- it will literally make you sick and God cannot forgive us unless we forgive those who trespass against us.

He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. Psalm 146:7-9 (NIV)

The LORD therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand. 1 Samuel 24:12 (ERV)

I have learned that there is blessing and power when we praise God in all of our circumstances. I know what some of you are thinking, so stay with me for a moment! I have to remind myself of this too (because the flesh wants to feel sorry for itself and find earthly things for comfort). But, when we look at God and not ourselves- when we lean on Him, He will strengthen us to walk through the trial that we are in. And He uses these trials to make us more in the image of his Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. You will see yourself changing for the better (this is the fruit of the Holy Spirit).
“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:29-30 (KJV)

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 (NIV)

We are blessed when we thank God. Thank Him for all that He has done, all that He is doing and all that He will do. When we do this, we are reminded of the great things that God has done for us in the past, and it puts our hearts in the right place- in thanksgiving. Sometimes the Holy Spirit very gently reminds me that I have a home, food to eat and a place to sleep- each one of these things are worth praising God for.

Sing a song to praise God! Blessings flow from praising God- you will start to feel better, I promise. It works for me and my singing voice is getting better (though no one wants to hear it anytime soon except for God)!
By the way, our enemy- Satan, hates to hear us praise God! How is that for a 2 for 1 deal? We please our Father and we drive away the enemy!

God is sovereign, He is perfect, He is always with His children and although we may not understand everything now, He is working His perfect will in His timing to bless us.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV)

Keep talking to Him – you will see wonderful blessings in your life!

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 (NIV)

And if you are alone (or just feel alone), please call us – we want to help you.

I would like to thank Bridget Farrell for contributing her wisdom and Janet Bonacci for her prayers – all of you are fantastic!
